Inspiration Mobility Group is proud to announce its endorsement of the Global Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Zero-Emission Medium- and Heavy-Duty Vehicles. Medium- and heavy-duty vehicles are an overall small portion of vehicles sold, but one of the largest contributors to air pollution across the globe. By signing the MOU, Inspiration Mobility Group aims to help transition all new truck and bus sales to zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) by 2040.

What Is the Global MOU?

A voluntary agreement developed by the CALSTART Drive to Zero™ campaign, the Global MOU has the cooperation of the Dutch government and is supported by a growing number of countries, subnational governments, and leading private-sector organizations. Signatories who endorse the Global MOU all commit to working toward:

  • An interim electrification goal of 30% integration by 2030

  • A target of 100% zero-emission truck and bus sales by 2040

This isn’t just an ambitious target, it’s one that’s necessary to reduce global carbon emissions. As the industry’s first electric fleet management company (eFMC™), we understand how challenging transitioning to EVs can be, especially for medium- and heavy-duty fleets. That’s why CALSTART is building the supportive ecosystem needed to scale this global transition which includes creating strategic partnerships, centralizing a knowledge exchange, creating innovative tools and sharing key research and findings, and highlighting the results of real carbon emissions work being done globally.

Why It Matters

Medium- and heavy-duty vehicles create a disproportionate amount of transportation-related greenhouse gas emissions and air pollutants. Phasing out the sale of combustion engine-powered vehicles in this segment is crucial for:

  • Economic opportunity: These vehicles cost less to operate and building them creates jobs in clean energy, vehicle production, and charging infrastructure.

  • Advancing technology: This is an underrepresented segment of vehicles compared to light-duty and passenger vehicles. A clear target presents the motivation needed to scale up production and expedite the transition

  • Public health: Eliminating tailpipe emissions improves air quality and reduces illness and disease.
  • Climate action: Reducing MHDV emissions is essential to meeting global climate targets.

Why Inspiration Endorsed the Global MOU

Inspiration Mobility Group was founded to accelerate fleet electrification in the U.S. (more here). Our endorsement of the Global MOU is a natural extension of this mission.

“Inspiration Mobility was founded with a single imperative: accelerate fleet electrification in the U.S.to decarbonize commercial transportation at scale. Endorsing the Global MOU is a natural extension of our core mission. As the second-largest contributor to emissions in the transportation sector, transitioning medium- and heavy-duty vehicles to ZEV is essential for combating climate change, improving air quality, and driving economic growth in a sustainable way. By supporting a 100% zero-emission future for truck and bus sales by 2040, we are helping to create a cleaner, healthier, and more resilient transportation system for all.”
Josh Green, CEO and Founder, Inspiration Mobility

By endorsing the Global MOU, Inspiration joins a diverse and growing coalition of stakeholders united by a common goal: a clean, equitable, and resilient transportation future.
